Don Pie and Toa Payoh: the comeback years, and the way there now

Quick answer
There is no Don Pie outlet in Toa Payoh today. Toa Payoh North is where Don Pie founder Chef Don Lim rebuilt after selling the Don Pie brand: a crab bee hoon stall at Blk 206 from about 2015, then Don's Pie & Cake at Food Centre II (1008A) from 2019, until the move to Tyrwhitt Road in 2021. The nearest current outlet is the AMK Hub kiosk, three MRT stops north.
People still type “don pie toa payoh” into their phones, and the reason is a good one. For roughly six years, between about 2015 and 2021, Toa Payoh North was where Chef Don Lim, the founder of Don Pie, worked his way back. First he cooked crab bee hoon soup alone in a coffee shop. Then he went back to baking the chicken pies that had made his name in the CBD.
Both of those stalls have closed. The pies did not disappear, though. They are baked today by DonChef’s team at Chicken Pie Kitchen & Don Signature Crab, 39 Tyrwhitt Road in Jalan Besar, and sold there and at four mall kiosks. This section of the guide is about the Toa Payoh chapter: what was there, when, and how a Toa Payoh resident can get a Don pie now.

Why Toa Payoh matters to the Don Pie story
Don Pie began in the CBD, at Far East Square, in 2000. Toa Payoh is not where the brand was born. It is where its founder started again after selling the brand, around 2014 to 2015. Food bloggers who found him there wrote about a one-man stall, a claypot of crab soup and a chef who had built a chain of pie shops in the CBD. When the pies came back in 2019, they came back here, at a food centre stall under the name Don’s Pie & Cake.
That is why the Toa Payoh years feel like the emotional middle of the story. They link the Raffles Place lunch pie of the 2000s to the restaurant on Tyrwhitt Road today.
