Quick answer

Don Signature Crab was the crab bee hoon stall of Don Pie founder Chef Don Lim, in a coffee shop at Blk 206 Toa Payoh North, #01-1197. Food blogs date the opening to March 2015 (the brand says 2014). A 2017 listing showed crab from about $25, open 12pm to 8.30pm. The stall has closed; the crab bee hoon is now served at Tyrwhitt Road and AMK Hub.

Most people who search for Don Pie in Toa Payoh are really remembering this stall, even if they do not know it. Don Signature Crab at Blk 206 Toa Payoh North, #01-1197, Singapore 310206 was where Chef Don Lim, the founder of Don Pie, cooked after he sold the Don Pie brand. It sold crab, not pies, and it built the reputation that still fills the crab side of his menu today.

When did the Blk 206 stall open?

Two food bloggers who visited put the opening in March 2015. The brand’s own timeline, written later, says the coffee-shop stall began in 2014. The gap is small, and we could not settle it, so we use “from about 2015” and leave it there.

What did it sell?

The stall was built around crab bee hoon soup: rice vermicelli in a herbal broth with a whole crab, served in a claypot. Write-ups from 2017 to 2019 also mention a claypot crab laksa version. Prices in a 2017 listing were about $25, $30 and $40 depending on the crab, with larger crabs going up to $55, and the stall opened from 12pm to 8.30pm daily.

What did people say about it?

Food blogs from the time were warm but honest. Several liked the broth and the value. Some compared it, unfavourably, with the city’s best-known crab bee hoon specialists and found it less intense; one 2019 visit rated the claypot crab laksa as merely decent. The common thread was a sense of surprise that the man who had founded a CBD pie chain was cooking crab alone in a heartland coffee shop.

That surprise is part of the charm of the Toa Payoh chapter. It is a rare case of a CBD brand founder turning up at a heartland kopitiam with a new dish and no pastry in sight.

How did you get there?

A 2017 post described the walk as about six minutes from Braddell MRT (NS18), Exit A, through the HDB estate. That is still a useful way to picture where the stall was: in Toa Payoh North, nearer Braddell than Toa Payoh Central.

Why did it close?

The stall did not so much close as move on. In 2019 Chef Don’s business shifted to 1008A Toa Payoh North, Toa Payoh Food Centre II, where the pies came back under the name Don’s Pie & Cake, alongside the crab. The 2017 SG Food on Foot post about Blk 206 is now marked closed.

Where to get the crab now

The crab bee hoon soup is on the menu at the Tyrwhitt Road flagship in Jalan Besar, and crab dishes are also sold at the AMK Hub kiosk. The other kiosks sell pies only. For the full background on the dish, read the crab bee hoon side of the story.

Please do not go to Blk 206 looking for the stall. It is not there, and the coffee shop has nothing to do with Don Pie today.
